As the 2019 general elections draw closer, the Ibiono Ibom Clan council together with the Ibiono Ibom Welfare and Development Union (IWADU) have said they will hold representatives elected into the different offices that have anything to do with Ibiono Ibom people to higher standards of accountability on behalf of the people.

The Clan Council and IWADU stated this on Thursday when candidates seeking elections into the State and National Assemblies on the platform of the All Progressives Congress (APC) paid a consultation visit to the Clan council and IWADU.

The APC Candidates who paid a consultation visit to the joint assembly of the Ibiono Ibom Clan Council and IWADU include the Senatorial Candidate for Uyo Senatorial District, Rt. Hon. Bassey Etim, the candidate for Itu/Ibiono Federal Constiutency Barr. Edet Ikotidem, as well as the candidate seeking election into the Akwa Ibom State House of Assembly Mr Owoedinyene Ekpenyong.

Addressing the candidates, the Paramount Ruler of Ibiono Ibom and Chairman, Ibiono Clan council His Royal Majesty Dr Ime Udousoro Inyang maintained that Ibiono Ibom nation will, going forward, intensify its demand for robust and people-centered representation from everyone who is elected to represent the people of Ibiono Ibom.

The Paramount ruler expressed his disappointment at the attitude of some elected officials in Ibiono Ibom who once they get into office abandon their primary *responsibility of placing the interest of the Local Government first and go into the pursuits of narrow, selfish and pecuniary interests.

“We do not understand how someone who was elected by the Ibiono Ibom people, or who was elected through the contributory votes from Ibiono Ibom people will, for instance, decide to ignore several invitations by the people of ibiono Ibom whenever we come together to pursue a common development project or initiative. It clearly shows that this kind of elected officials do not have regard for Ibiono Ibom. This is the reason we are sending the clear message that going forward, it will no longer be business as usual. Anyone who fails to identify with, and contribute to the actualization of the Ibiono Ibom development agenda, the people of Ibiono Ibom will not vote for him in the forthcoming elections. I want to also remind every politician that ibiono ibom nation will not welcome any act of violence and unrest during the forthcoming elections. We urge everyone in the different political parties to conduct their affairs in a peaceful and orderly manner and to resist the temptation to unleash violence in a bid to get elected” Okuku Ime Udousoro Inyang warned.

In his remarks, President-General of IWADU, Dr Effiong Inyang said as a pro-development socio-cultural organization which is non-partisan, the Ibiono Ibom Welfare and Development Union has always been deeply interested in character and pedigree of those aspiring to lead Ibiono Ibom at various levels.

Dr Inyang recalled that it was this interest that had caused IWADU to invite stakeholders of the different political parties sometime last year to engage and remind them of the need to present only candidates that will understand that they are elected to pursue the collective interest of ibiono ibom nation.

“If Ibiono Ibom had more sons and daughters who saw their positions as platforms for making a difference, Ibiono Ibom will not be where it is today. Sadly, only one or two Ibiono Ibom sons have continued to put in efforts in pushing the collective Ibiono Ibom agenda. It is also heart-breaking to state that instead of coming together as force for the greater good, some politicians of Ibiono Ibom descent have turned to become major causes of the problems we have in this Local Government.

In their separate remarks, the Secretary of the Ibiono Ibom Clan council, Chief Okon Antia, the Clan Head of Ikpanya, His Royal Highness, Obong Isaac Onosin Group Head of Ididep, Obong Nwanaokwo Nkanta, tasked the candidates to understand that every election signifies a contract between the candidates and electorates, stressing that any candidate who fails to honour the promises he made to the electorates is guilty of breaching the terms of the social contract he entered with the electorates. The Royal fathers stressed that Ibiono Ibom cannot continue to be treated with disdain by some of its sons who are members of the political class.

Earlier, the trio of Hon Bassey Etim, Barr Edet Ikotidem and Mr Owoedinyene Ekpenyong in their separate abridged versions of manifestos said they were in the race to offer a new deal in terms of representation for the people in the various tiers of the legislature. Their individual blueprint revolved around the core areas of legislation for citizens’ empowerment, pushing for the gazetting of the over 100 villages in Ibiono Ibom as well as attracting more constituency projects to Ibiono Ibom the Federal Constituency and the Senatorial District.

Prayers for God’s guidance were offered for the candidates

The consultation meeting had in attendance Clan heads, Group heads, village heads, Past Presidents-General of IWADU, National officers and Chapter Presidents of IWADU as well as political stakeholders of APC in Ibiono Ibom LGA, Itu/Federal Constituency as well as Uyo Senatorial District.
